Hey, Colorado! Let’s fight gun violence | Week of April 8th, 2024

Colorado Bureau of Investigation Authority to Investigate Firearms Crimes(SB24-003):

Last week I mentioned this passed the Senate! As a reminder, Here is the tea on the Senate votes:

  • YES votes: Bridges(D), Coleman(D), Cutter(D), Danielson(D), Exum(D), Fields(D), Gonzales(D), Hansen(D), Hinrichsen(D), Jaquez Lewis(D), Kolker(D), Marchman(D), Michaelson Jenet(D), Mullica(D), Priola(D), Roberts(D), Rodriguez(D), Sullivan(D), Winter F.(D), Zenzinger(D), Fenberg(D)

Please be aware the bill has been amended.

The main changes are just being more specific about having the CBI work alongside local law enforcement, where money goes, the amount of funding, and more.

The next step is a hearing that is happening today, 4/10, at the House Judiciary Committee.

Unless your house rep is Monica Duran or Meg Froelich, it would be worth it to call to ask your rep to sponsor or support this bill.

Prohibiting Carrying Firearms in Sensitive Spaces(SB24-131):

The first committee hearing is tomorrow 4/11/2024. It would be worth your time calling your Senator to let them know you support this bill.

Prohibit Certain Weapons Used in Mass Shootings (AKA Assault Weapons Ban)(HB24-1292):

Bill Summary: “The bill defines the term “assault weapon” and prohibits a person from manufacturing, importing, purchasing, selling, offering to sell, or transferring ownership of an assault weapon. The bill further prohibits a person from possessing a rapid-fire trigger activator. A person in violation of the prohibitions will be assessed a first-time penalty of $250,000 and $500,000 for each subsequent violation.”

There are several exceptions for certain professions and situations outlined in the bill.

FANTASTIC NEWS! THIS BILL MADE IT OUT OF COMMITTEE. This is further than it got last time! Today, at 9:00 AM, they are reading the bill on the house floor. Well it might not be right at 9:00 AM, they have other agenda items. But we are going to get a good temp check on how the house is feeling about the bill tomorrow but it has a lot of other sponsors which is a great sign:

This is an important bill to call about with your house rep this week.

Here is a sample script for your HOUSE REP this week:

“Hello Representative [LAST_NAME], My name is [YOUR_NAME] and I am your constituent in [YOUR_CITY]. I wanted to call and let you know that I would urge you to vote yes on Senate bill (SB24-131) , Senate Bill (SB24-003), and House bill (HB24-1292) that is headed your way. Firearm violence is a priority for me as a voter and with primaries coming up, I will be paying attention to which of my representatives votes to pass common sense firearm legislation”

Or you can just say “Hey Representative, please support Senate bill (SB24-131), Senate Bill (SB24-003), and House bill (HB24-1292). Thanks”

Here is a sample script for your SENATORS this week:
